WWII Military Cap

Subject: WWII Military hat (Pilot's cap?)

Media: Charcoal

Notes: I'm quite pleased with the spontaneity of line with this one. Also, scanning a charcoal sketch makes a real mess of your scanner :)

Speed Sketching

Subject: Various

Media: Pen and Ink

Notes: Normally I sketch on a larger sheet in pencil or charcoal, and I like to take my time. I wanted to try and improve my ability to capture the "essence" of a subject. So with these sketches, I forced myself to use a smaller sketch pad (5x8), pen and ink (can't go back and erase it), and limited myself to 5 mintes for each sketch. I consider the results as somewhat so-so. There's a bit of a "scribbly" feel to these drawings - especially the one of the Snoqualamy river - which I chalk up to not being all that comfortable with the "rules" I created for myself, but the only way to improve is to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Of the five, I think I'm most pleased with the one of the Kirkland waterfront. I'd like to go back with a larger pad and some charcoal someday...or maybe even try my hand at an En Plein Air watercolor...I should probably learn to use watercolors first :)

Cow's Skull

Subject: An old cow skull

Media: Charcoal

Notes: This made a rather interesting subject, lots of nooks and crannies made for interesting highlights and shadows.
